There are loads of evolution “simulators” out there you can get and watch as the cogs of natural selection tick over. However, the vast majority of these are either laughably simple, bare little relation to reality or have nothing to do with evolution (Spore, I’m looking at you).
So I present to you Species! This excellent little sim models a very complex 3D world full of proper creatures which evolve. There’s no direction or pre-programming (although the player can induce mutations) making it a top quality representation of evolution in action. And kinda cool to watch too.
But don’t take my word for it. Here is an account of my first playthrough with the latest version, 0.4.1. I shan’t interfere, so just watch as a natural ecosystem unfolds before your very eyes! Simply click the first picture to watch the slideshow and read my commentary below the image title (you know you want to).
So what are you waiting for, go get species!
This game is being created independently by a tiny team who need all the support they can get. Not many people know about it so if you do give it a try, be sure to post your own playthrough on your blog. Spread the word and also tell me if you do. It’s fascinating to see what different creatures can arise.

This is really cool. I’ve been looking for something like this for a long time. Where can I get a copy of this game?

Thanks! I will check this out, looks like a very handy little game for watching evolution
I’ve been following it since before the alpha release. The dev blog has been interesting and looking back, this came hasn’t disappointed unlike some (once, again I’m looking at Spore)
